5 Ways To Enjoy This Internet Enhanced Work Of Fiction
- Listen? Or Read?
- Online? Or Offline?
- Interactively? Or Independently?
- Share? Or Secret Pleasure?
- Donate? Or My Gift To You?
ONE: Listen? Or Read?
I'm releasing episodes of THE VEINGEL in multiple formats. Each episode will be recorded as an audio track you can listen to, and as text you can read. THE VEINGEL is a serialized novel. That means pieces of the story are released on a regular basis—not all at once. If you're coming to the story late, you'll probably want to catch up from the beginning of the story.
TWO: Online? Or Offline?
You can read and/or listen to episodes online directly from this web site if you'd like. For listening online, each episode has a small "play" icon positioned beside its title link in the list of episodes. Clicking this icon will stream the episode live over your computer's speakers. Alternatively, if you'd like to continue surfing the web while you listen to an episode, you can launch the pop-up player using the link in the sidebar (under the heading Listen Live).
For reading online, simply click the title link of any episode you'd like to read. Doing so will load a page dedicated to that episode, and you will be able to read the full HTML version of the episode there. For your convenience, I've also placed the familiar "play" icon on these individual episode pages. These full-text episode pages also act as the "permalink" for a given episode.
For offline enjoyment—reading the text on a PDA or e-book reader, for example—or listening to episodes on an iPod or other MP3 player, you will find download links provided in the web page dedicated to each episode (accessed by clicking the title link for the episode in question). For offline reading I will provide links for most of the more popular digital text formats (PDF, MS Reader, RTF, etcetera), and would be happy to make additional formats available by request. To download these text versions of an episode, simply 'right-click' the appropriate link provided and choose 'save as' to download a copy of the episode to your computer where you can then sync it to your device of choice for later reading.
For offline listening, the process is the same: just 'right-click' the link pointing to the MP3 version of the episode, and choose 'save as' to download it. For now, only MP3 audio versions will be available, but if you need something else, let me know and I'll look into it.
Hint: for the ultimate in convenience, you should subscribe to THE VEINGEL through the provided RSS feed.
If you have a computer, or an MP3 player that can access and download podcasts (an iPod for instance)—and you want to listen to the newest episode of THE VEINGEL as soon as it's released—then the easiest thing is to just subscribe to the RSS Feed. If you'd like to read the hypertext version of the episodes in your favorite RSS reader, you can subscribe to the same feed, which also contains the text. Even if you'd rather download MP3 files individually, or access one of the digitized formats, subscribing to the RSS Feed is still a good idea, because it will contain links back to this website where you can access other versions of the episode. It will also serve as a reminder whenever the newest episode becomes available. If "podcast" or "RSS Feed" are unfamiliar terms, don't fret. Here's a quick tutorial to demystify these technologies. Here's another one.
In short, think of RSS Feeds and podcasts (RSS feeds with audio enclosures) as TiVo for your computer or MP3 player—and no, you don't need an Apple iPod to listen to podcasts (though they are good devices for doing just that). If you've never heard of TiVo, think of a podcast or RSS feed as a magazine subscription for the content appearing on your favorite website. Whenever a new "issue" or article or episode is released, your RSS feed aggregator / podcatcher will receive it automatically once you've subscribed (which is normally just as simple as cutting-and-pasting the feed URL into the appropriate field in your software).
I've tried to keep the number of RSS feeds to a minimum, but you do have a few options with regard to the one you choose to subscribe to. Let me outline those briefly:
- THE VEINGEL master RSS feed: This feed is generated directly from this web site (and further modified over at Feedburner.com). It contains both the text and the audio for THE VEINGEL, but only lists episodes for the last 7 days. So, you should only subscribe to this feed after you've caught up in your reading to within 6 episodes of the very latest episode listed on this web site. This feed may also contain occasional "bonus" material not available in the other feeds, and it may contain audio of a slightly higher quality. It's also the only feed sure to contain HTML versions of each episode that your feed reader can present to you, so if you're reading rather than listening, this is for sure the feed you should subscribe to.
- The Podiobooks feed: (coming soon, after the official launch) Many, many people who listen to podcasted novels discover them through Podiobooks.com. It's a really great service, and it's also free which is cool. Another nice feature is that they perform some RSS Feed magic to keep your listening device "auto-magically" synced with the most recent episodes from the very beginning of the story that you haven't listened to yet. In theory, that means you don't have to "catch up" before subscribing to their feed, and when it works, it's very simple. Plus, they offer many other audio book podcasts on their site from other authors, and when you join, they'll help you organize your listening experience and find new stuff to listen to.
- iTunes feed: (coming soon, after the official launch) This feed is exactly the same as the master feed described above, except you'll find it in the iTunes directory. If you use iTunes to manage your music and audio books, you can also click the little icon in the sidebar to automatically subscribe to THE VEINGEL in iTunes.
THREE: Interactively? Or Independently?
One of the advantages of releasing a web-enhanced novel like THE VEINGEL is that it shortens the distance between the author and the reader / listener. You can ask me questions, post feedback, suggest plot twists, or even tell me you think I'm a worthless hack if you want—all before the book is even finished!—not after the print version is already on shelves. Specifically, there are two ways you can interact with me and/or other readers and listeners:
- by posting comments using the form provided at the bottom of every episode's full-text web page
- by becoming a member of the site and posting on the discussion forums—which is free by the way
FOUR: Share? Or Secret Pleasure?
If you know someone who would enjoy THE VEINGEL, why not tell them about it? Because let's face it, the enemy of authors isn't piracy, it's obscurity, and I count on readers and listeners like you to get the word out. There's several ways you can help in that regard:
- You can email an episode to a friend using the link provided at the bottom of each episode or in the sidebar.
- You can copy one of the HTML snippets into your website, blog, or email signature block by using the code available here .
FIVE: Donate? Or My Gift To You?
It's up to you, but if you choose to donate, I'll really appreciate it. Donating keeps THE VEINGEL free of annoying ads and sponsorship messages. It also keeps the story free for those who can't afford to donate right now. And someday, if I'm lucky, and if enough people enjoy my work, this book (and future books I release in the same manner) might provide a significant source of income for me. Wouldn't it be great to spend far less than you would on a typical print book, and yet be able to support the authors you appreciate?
Donate using the button in the sidebar.
